This ol' boy has been around in the DiMarzio lineup since 1978. I've owned several, and am currently running a Pre-CBS, the precursor to the PreB-1, in a tele clone. This is a great workhorse of a pickup, with plenty of punch, clocking in around 14.5K, and lots of definition. The problem, if you can call it that, is that it's been around since 1978, and a lot has happened to pickups and the way they're wound and used since it's inception. You get the feeling that the PreB sits right on the cusp of greatness, it's just lacking that certain something to get it over that hump that so many quality pickups come up against, and that hump is killer tone. But you can grit it up real good with some distortion. In my opinion, the PreB needs to be upgraded by Larry DiMarzio and his crew of pickup wizards, and find that killer tone thing. Shouldn't be too hard since DiMarzio has a reputation of building quality pickups, and giving the old PreB-1 a face lift hopefully will breathe new fire and life into this ol' boy. But then again, it could just be me. Until then, get yourself one and try it out. You can usually find one on the cheap here on eBay if you look around awhile. It's a great pickup for the money and who knows, maybe DiMarzio will come out with a PreB firebreather upgrade in the meantime, and the universe will be aligned again.Read full review

This is the perfect tele bridge pickup. Still has all of the twang and pop you want but none of the shrill high end. Balances perfectly with a standard vintage output neck pickup. Just wire with 250K pots for volume and tone and use a .22 cap. You will have a balanced set of pickups and a volume and tone knob that don't have to be changed when switching pickups. Imagine that on a tele!
